Before taking abortion pills, there are things to know about your pregnancy.
Do you know how far along you are?
The abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound can help confirm whether you are within that timeframe and what to expect.
Is the pregnancy developing in the uterus?
An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the uterus and cannot be treated with abortion pills.
An ultrasound can help assess whether the pregnancy appears to be developing in the uterus. If there are symptoms or findings that raise concern for an ectopic pregnancy, additional medical evaluation may be needed
Is the pregnancy viable?
A positive pregnancy test detects pregnancy hormones but does not tell you whether the pregnancy will continue. Up to 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
An ultrasound may provide additional information about whether your pregnancy is progressing or shows signs of miscarriage.
Do you have an IUD or certain health conditions?
An IUD and some health conditions or medications may affect whether abortion pills are appropriate for you. Be sure to discuss your medical history with the provider prescribing or providing the medication.
