What Are the Risks of Taking Abortion Pills Too Late? Why Accurate Dating Matters in DC

If you’re considering ordering abortion pills online, one of the most important questions to answer first is:

How far along am I?

That may sound simple, but it’s often not simple. Many women don’t know exactly when they conceived, cycles can be irregular, and online due date calculators can be off by days or even weeks. When it comes to abortion pills, being even a little wrong about gestational age can increase risks and complications. It’s also possible that a natural miscarriage is already happening.

This is why an ultrasound is so important before taking abortion pills, especially if you’re unsure of your dates.

Why Taking Abortion Pills “Too Late” Can Be Risky

As pregnancy progresses, the body’s response can change, and while taking abortion pills at any stage has side effects and risks, the likelihood of complications can increase. When abortion pills are taken later than recommended, some of the risks may include:

Incomplete abortion (fetal tissue not fully expelled)

One of the most common complications when abortion pills are taken later is an incomplete abortion, meaning the pregnancy may not fully pass. This can lead to:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding

  • Infection and fever

  • Ongoing cramping

  • Need for follow-up medical care

  • Possible surgical intervention to remove the remaining tissue

Heavier bleeding and more severe pain

Later gestational age can mean:

  • More intense cramping

  • More bleeding

  • A higher chance of symptoms lasting longer than expected

Heavy bleeding can become dangerous if it leads to weakness, dizziness, fainting, or signs of significant blood loss.

Higher chance of needing emergency care

Even if someone wants privacy, taking pills too late can increase the chance they’ll need:

  • An urgent clinic visit

  • A hospital evaluation or hospitalization

  • Blood work, medication, or a procedure to stop bleeding or complete the process

Missing a dangerous condition: ectopic pregnancy

One of the biggest reasons to confirm pregnancy location is that abortion pills do not treat ectopic pregnancy (when the pregnancy implants outside the uterus, often in a fallopian tube).

An ectopic pregnancy can become life-threatening if it ruptures and causes internal bleeding.

Signs can be subtle at first, and you cannot reliably diagnose an ectopic pregnancy at home. An ultrasound (and sometimes blood tests) helps detect this early.
